The Journey of Discipleship
Devotional for May 2025: The Call to Discipleship
Scripture Reading: Matthew 28:18-20 (NIV) "Then Jesus came to them and said, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.'"
Reflection: As we step into May, we are reminded of the Great Commission—Jesus’ powerful mandate to His followers. Discipleship is not merely a call to believe; it’s an invitation to enter into a transformative relationship with Christ and to lead others into the same experience. Discipleship is about growing in faith and helping others grow, too.
The essence of discipleship lies in three key components: following, learning, and sharing. In our daily lives, we are called to follow Christ’s example, to learn from His teachings, and to share His love with others. This month, let us reflect on what it truly means to be a disciple.
1. Following Christ: To be a disciple, we must first be willing to follow. Jesus calls us to deny ourselves and take up our cross (Matthew 16:24). This means surrendering our desires, ambitions, and even our fears to align ourselves with His will. What does it look like in your life to follow Christ daily? Take time this week to pray and ask for clarity on His direction for you.
2. Learning from His Word: Discipleship involves a commitment to learning. The Bible is rich with teachings that guide us in our journey. This month, challenge yourself to dive deeper into the Scriptures. Perhaps you could start a study group, engage in a Bible reading plan, or explore a theme that speaks to your heart. Remember, Jesus instructed us to teach others what He commanded—this means we must first know it ourselves!
3. Sharing the Good News: Finally, discipleship compels us to share the love and message of Christ. Who in your life needs to hear the good news? Pray for opportunities to share your faith, whether through conversations, acts of kindness, or community service. Our lives are testimonies of Christ’s love and grace. Let your light shine brightly!
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for calling me to be a disciple. Help me to follow You wholeheartedly, to learn from Your Word, and to share Your love with those around me. Give me the courage to step out of my comfort zone and embrace the call to disciple others. May my life reflect Your grace and truth. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
Action Step: This month, intentionally seek out a person who you can mentor or invest in spiritually. Arrange a time to meet, pray together, and explore Scripture. Discipleship grows in community, and your investment could lead to transformative growth for both of you.
Closing Thought: Discipleship is a journey, not a destination. As we walk this path, let us encourage one another, share our stories, and celebrate the work God is doing in our lives and in the lives of those we disciple. Together, we can fulfill the Great Commission and make a lasting impact for the Kingdom of God.
